How to set up a Facebook Page for your shop

The steps in order, with the spots that catch people out: the phone number that won’t delete, the username that doesn’t work yet, and the profile circle that covers your cover photo. Plan on about 20 minutes.

Before you start

Step 1: Create the Page

  1. Log in to Facebook, click Pages on the left, then Create Page. On a phone it's Menu > Pages > Create. These are Facebook's own steps.
  2. Pick Public Page if it asks, then Get Started.
  3. Type the shop's name exactly as customers know it.
  4. For Category, start typing what you sell and pick the closest match. You can change it later.
  5. Write a short bio: what you sell, who it's for, and your website. Then Create Page.

Step 2: Contact details (and what to leave out)

  1. Website: your shop's link.
  2. Email: the shop email.
  3. Phone: leave it blank unless it's a number you'll really answer for this shop. Facebook can make a phone number hard to take off later, and if you run more than one business, a shared number links them together.
  4. Location: if you only sell online, don't add an address. Facebook may suggest one from your ZIP code; clear it.
  5. WhatsApp: click Skip unless you use WhatsApp for the shop.

Step 3: Profile picture and cover photo

What Facebook asks for, from its Page photo size help:

WhatSizeWatch out for
Profile picture320 x 320 for best quality. Shows at 176 x 176 on computers and 196 x 196 on phonesIt's cropped to a circle, so keep the logo away from the corners
Cover photoAt least 400 x 150. Loads fastest at 851 x 315The left side is partly covered by the profile picture, and it's cropped differently on phones and computers

The quick way: on the Logo maker page, use Already have a logo?. Upload your logo and download the free pack. It has the round-safe profile picture and a 1640 x 624 Facebook cover, about twice Facebook's size so it stays sharp, with your logo placed up and to the middle, away from the profile circle. You get it in white, dark and your own colour. Nothing about your logo is redrawn by AI.

After uploading the cover, Facebook lets you drag it. Leave it centred, press Save, then look at the Page on your phone too.

Step 4: Your @username and web address

The username gives the Page a short address like facebook.com/yourshop. To set it, per Facebook's username steps: switch into the Page, click its picture top right, then Settings & privacy > Settings > Page setup > Name, and Edit next to username.

Step 5: The action button

  1. On the Page, click ··· (Options), then Add action button. These are Facebook's steps.
  2. Pick Shop now or Learn more and give it your shop's link.
  3. Avoid Call now unless you want calls: it needs a phone number on the Page.

Step 6: Your first posts

Questions

Do I need a separate Facebook account for my business?

No. You make the Page from your own personal login, and the Page shows the shop name, not yours. Facebook allows one personal account per person.

What size is a Facebook Page cover photo?

At least 400 x 150. Facebook says it loads fastest at 851 x 315. The profile picture covers part of the left side, so keep your logo up and toward the middle.

Why does facebook.com/myshop say this content isn’t available?

That username isn’t on your Page. It didn’t save, a new Page can’t pick one yet, or someone else already has it. Set it in Settings > Page setup > Name, then test it in a private window.

Facebook won’t let me delete the phone number. What can I do?

First change the action button if it’s Call now or WhatsApp, since those need a phone. Then try deleting it in the Facebook app on your phone, or in Meta Business Suite settings. That’s why it’s best not to add one you don’t want.

Should I put my home address on the Page?

Not if you only sell online. Leave the location blank so your address isn’t public.
